It is mind boggling how quickly a disease could get out of hand, when you think about air travel. One person enters a plane, stays for hours, all inside breathe the same air. Then that person arrives at their destination, while endangering everyone on the plane, in the airport, and anyone they come into contact with. Then, should they be found seriously ill, those who transport them, the medical staff they are served by, and any who enter their space, could be in imminent danger.
I am no genius or scientist. But I think a lot of our problems could arise from our major obsession with not allowing our bodies, and consequently, immune systems, to come into contact with such things as germs. Without doing so, how do we build up immunity to things that may cause us harm? I know a relative degree of cleanliness, and good hygiene, are mandatory. But I think some carry it to extremes. If every human is continually shielded from, and deathly afraid of a little dirt, or a germ, how will our society ever survive?
In some ways, I believe my daughter is right, she says she is not going to keep her kids from getting a little dirty. She did, and I'm sure I did, as a child. I would think, in some ways, perpetually cleaning with harsh antibacterial products, would rank right up there with constantly sanitizing your hands, or over-using antibiotics. Wash them, sure, but are such extreme measures really necessary? Personally, I don't believe it has hurt either one of us, having been raised, and living, in the country. Where things may not always be immaculate, but so far, I've never run across anything that wouldn't eventually wash off.
