Society "Ills"

I was listening to a popular talk show on television, where they are discussing cyber bullying. It is terrible, what some children, and from what they are saying, particularly young girls, are subjected to, and being horribly humiliated by. Many to the point of suicide. Which brings me again to one of my favourite ills of our society. What ever happened to raising a child up to care about others, not speak ill of others, and above all, if you can't say anything good, keep your mouth shut? That used to be one of my mother's favourite sayings.

I realize the Internet has been a huge help to our society, but when it is used in good ways. When people do not seriously think about what they put out there, from which there is no "getting it back," or deleting it, is when it can become a very bad thing. Others should not have to suffer, just because some didn't have the proper "fetchin' up."

My mother was a wise woman, and out of her four children, most of us grew up with a modicum of decency to those around them. I, in turn, tried my darnedest to bring my daughter up as a caring, considerate, respectful, and productive member of society. She, in turn, is doing her best to do the same for her young child. I know it is not easy in this morally lax, over 18 material-laden world, where too many know too much way too soon. And in many cases, about all the wrong stuff.

But just because you are surrounded by the wrong things, or people, doesn't mean you have to follow in their foot steps or act like they do. We are all born with a brain, some of us use it more than others, but all are allowed to use them. Respect for our elders and authority figures, consideration and thoughtfulness for others, and manners should never be allowed to fall by the way side. And you are never too young, or too old, to utilize these traits, or instil them in your young.

Just my opinion, out here in the country, where we aren't subjected to quite as many bad manners, but are not entirely exempt.
