As I See It

It amazes me what people sometimes spend their money on. Our new neighbours recently went to a home improvement store, where my husband works part time, and bought a fire ring. Which is basically a steel ring with stones, that you buy, to set up in your yard. My husband helped them load it into the back of their mini van type vehicle, thirty-six, 20lb., uniform shaped rocks, and a steel ring. He thought it would be too much weight for the vehicle, but they made it home. The next day they had it assembled, and yesterday the gravel was delivered to surround it. Apparently they are building some kind of out in the yard patio.

Its strange, over the years out here in the country, we've had bonfires, camp fires, cook out fires, and have never bought anything like that. I guess since I'm basically an old fashioned, down to Earth person, I believe in doing things the old way, with minimal expense. That outfit had to have cost them a few hundred dollars, I'd think. And back when we used to have fires, my then husband got an old tractor trailer wheel rim, and the grate off of an old round barbecue. This worked satisfactorily, you could lay food right on the grill, or put it in a pan and set it on top.

If you just wanted coals, you could remove the grill, and sharpen sticks to roast hot dogs or marshmallows. If you wanted an old fashioned bonfire to sit around and drink, or roast hot dogs or marshmallows, you chose a different spot. If you wanted a pit to roast a pig, you set the tractor trailer wheel rim aside, and dug down beneath it. It worked well, whatever kind of fire you wanted, and required little expense.

But then, I suppose I am, and live, in a far simpler fashion than most people. I don't need a lot of stuff, fancy gadgets, and the most expensive or complicated possessions. I guess in my opinion, less is more, when a dug pit, a few rocks, and a few sticks of fire wood will work, who needs more? You already have the fresh country air, trees, the trill of song birds, the babble of the creek, and green all around you, what more could you ask for?
