Unemployment

Where is a good place to draw the line? I know what its like to draw unemployment, I have twice, in fact, but eventually it has to run out. How long can the government continue to support so many unemployed workers? I realize, from past experience, it isn't easy finding a job that actually pays a living wage. I've lost two jobs to plant closings, one I'd been at for 22 years, that had actually paid good wages and benefits. The second I'd only been at, for about five years, had been a serious pay cut from the beginning, but during that time it did increase, and the benefits didn't entirely suck.

After both jobs, I drew unemployment for awhile, the last one for the ninety-nine weeks. The last thirteen of which, I had to do the look for a job, document it, and report my findings to the unemployment office thing. I looked everywhere within nearly a hundred mile radius for jobs, in person, over the phone, and online, finding nothing. But it had to be done, even though nothing came of it. At least it gave me a thirteen week extension, then nothing.

Unfortunately, many come to rely on this assistance, even though it isn't a lot, not thinking about the fact that it will eventually run out. Then what? And sad, but true, such will be the fate of many, in a very short time. Where do they turn then? If they are lucky, maybe they will find a minimum wage job, although probably without benefits. It is a tough row to hoe for those with a family, and responsibilities. I know, I've been there, twice, with just me to provide, and I had a teen aged daughter.

Short of food stamps, welfare, and Medicaid, where do responsible people turn? How do you drive long distances, for low wages, and no benefits, when money is scarce? Gas, and groceries, are ridiculous, and Heaven help you, if you, or a family member, become ill or need a doctor. Its easy to be a government official and say they can no longer afford to help people who need it. While most sit at their cushy jobs, draw healthy pay checks, and never have to worry about affording anything but the best doctors and health care.

This is just another of the many things wrong with our country. They say the economy is getting better, so these people won't have any problem finding jobs and getting by. Well, its easy for them to say, decent jobs aren't available just anywhere. I know, I live in the country, there are only x amount of jobs in our area, and driving the thirty, or more, miles to the nearest larger towns, would not be inexpensive. Another one of the many things I don't understand, but I feel bad for the many people affected by government decisions.

Inappropriate

Is there any end to the outrageousness of some of today's celebrities? I don't believe there is. I swear, some of the things I hear come out of their mouths on television, or read about them, just boggles my mind. I realize I'm older, much more inhibited, and down right conservative, to say the least. And it even some what shocks me how this stuff is right there on daytime tv, and any supermarket shelf or tabloid. Even right next to the check out counters, where any child, or less sophisticated individual can see it.

Which certainly brings me to believe that just about anything goes any more, and that there is no level the downward slide of our society won't sink to. Look at the stuff we call entertainment these days, scantily clad women cavorting on the stage in DWTS, zombies, decaying flesh, and walking dead on television series, and some of the stuff they talk about on these day time talk shows. Oh kay... I'm no prude, but I cease to find the entertainment value in much of this stuff, or the need for it.

I am not a fan of any celebrity, but I do believe some of the younger ones go out of their way to be as ridiculous in their actions as possible. Some of what they wear could once be described as under clothes, and many people would not be caught dead going out in public in it. And the way they talk, the things they say, and how they conduct themselves, would have, at one time, been reprimand-able by parents. But as the saying goes, apparently any publicity is good, even if it is bad.

I was brought up to believe these people were supposed to conduct themselves as role models for the young. But, now days, I consider this quite frightening. They don't think going from man to man, having children out of wedlock, and many other things, are inappropriate behaviour. Call me square, out of touch, or whatever, but I still believe some body parts should remain covered, some activities aren't appropriate in public, and children, in most cases, should be brought up in a family.

Common Courtesy

It never ceases to amaze me how common courtesy seems to have fallen by the wayside. Are people just too busy running their everyday lives to appreciate anything any more, or do they just not care? For a couple of years there was an Indian fellow operating a local gas station, who every time you went in to pay, had his ear glued to a telephone. He'd find the time to make change, and take your money, but couldn't be bothered to speak or say thank you for your service. I considered that extremely rude, eventually stopped going there, and awhile later the place was taken over by someone else.

And the practice of sending thank you cards for gifts, etc. Is this something newer generations don't consider important? Or do they just consider it their due when someone gives them a gift for a wedding, graduation, or whatever the occasion? And therefore, have no need to thank the person for their thoughtfulness? I know I'm older, and from another generation, but my Mother taught me to send thank you cards. I still consider this gesture important, particularly if someone gives you money. At least in that way, you know they did indeed receive their gift. This is a gesture, I have in turn, passed on to my daughter.

Even in a store, should I walk in front of someone, I say excuse me, if someone holds a door for me, I say thank you. What is so time consuming or difficult about showing a little respect, and gratefulness, if someone deserves it? I've even received nice responses from some individuals, but not all. Even when they look at you as though they hadn't expected it. Unfortunately, I have to assume, such practices are not common these days. Many, particularly young people would as soon say, screw you, as excuse me, thank you, or you're welcome.

It will be a mighty sad day indeed, should thoughtless and inconsideration become the norm. Parents need to stress the importance of common courtesies to their youngsters. Many people appreciate that little gesture of please, thank you, or you're welcome. Lets not turn our society into an ungrateful lot, but one where we at least show a little respect and thankfulness for simple gestures. And I'm not referring to a "one fingered salute." Times are tough enough, and we all have our battles to fight, but simple courtesies are just that, simple, not time consuming.

Time

I can hardly wrap my mind around the fact that it is less than a week until Thanksgiving. Where does the time go? I guess it certainly is true whoever said "life is like a roll of toilet paper, the closer you get to the end, the faster it goes." I remember being a child and thinking a year seemed like it went on forever. Now days, it seems like a week is like a day, a month like a week, and a year isn't really very long. Its amazing how your perspective changes over time.

It seems like just a few months ago when it became the year 2000, and everyone was so concerned about what the change could mean to the world. And now its nearly fourteen years later. It just doesn't seem fair how so much time has slipped away? And sometimes I think back and wonder how in the world can I be this old? But I've been pretty fortunate, and hope that continues for a good many more years. Then I look at my nearly thirty year old daughter, and think, yes, you really are that old.

Or I can look out the window and see the once cleared side hill behind my house, where we used to pasture cattle. We used to keep it up every Summer, cutting and burning what needed to be done. I can barely see the ground any longer, for the scrub brush, weeds, and trees. Time waits for no one, and Nature definitely takes its course. But then, I guess that's the way it goes, and what is expected in the natural scheme of things. Or even the cycle of life, as we know it. If life spun its wheels, none of us who are presently here, would be here now, and the world as we know it, would not exist.

So I suppose we have to take life as it comes, hope for the best, and live our lives to the fullest we are able. We have such a limited amount, and some more than others, allotted to us. Normally I don't really have any great expectations of the holidays, because we don't usually celebrate them with any great amount of gusto. Although I always look forward to my daughter's coming home, and now my beautiful little granddaughter. It is always great to see them, and get to spend some time with them, even though way too short. But then, I try to be very grateful for the good things in life.

For Real?

My husband is a big fan of the business channels, where they continuously talk about stock markets, DJ, NASDAQ, etc. averages, money, and debt. Which is okay, as long as I'm not required to listen to it all day long. It just boggles my mind the ridiculously huge dollar amounts that are everyday conversation on there. Figures the average person could never hope to understand, or accumulate in their entire lifetime.

Used to be hundreds of dollars seemed significant, then thousands, and now days its nothing to hear millions, billions, and even trillions. Who can even conceive of such vast amounts of wealth? Not I, that is for sure. And the National Debt?! Good Lord, how is that even possible? Has to be due to the sky rocketing cost of everything, total disregard for staggering debt, interest accumulation, and other mind blowing reasons, the average person cannot grasp the concept of.

I know I, for one, cannot imagine that ever being decreased, or heaven forbid, paid off. I don't even pretend to understand how these things work, but even I get concerned when they show the ND ticker on television. Did you ever see anything whiz along, constantly growing, and so beyond belief? Where will it end, and what will it be when our children, and children's children reach maturity? Unfortunately, I cannot understand the concept of what it might mean to their future prosperity.

I get concerned when we go over our student loans, my husband's, for his post graduate schooling, and mine, for my daughter's education. And their total isn't even all that outlandish. But then, I have always been an average person, making mostly average income, as has he. Once, when my first husband, and I, were building our house, we accumulated over $5,000. on a credit card, and that was overwhelming to me. After he passed, that was one of the first priorities with me, to pay it off.

I am not a fan of debt, don't normally use a credit card, and drive a 2002 vehicle. And just do not get how people can have bunches of charge cards, with large balances, I could never do it comfortably. But then, I like things simple, steer clear of charging stuff, and try to take care of what I have, in order to avoid large purchases. And that's just the way it is.

Who Decides?

I don't get the whole insurance thing, if nobody can "get it right" why not just forget about it? At least until someone who knows what they are doing, can fix it. If it can't just be dumped, work out the flaws before releasing it onto the general public. The last thing anyone needs is another frustrating "muck up" to deal with. These "bugs" should have been completely worked out, and tested, long before this thing was passed or opened for business.

I seriously doubt that many average mortals would be bothered by this thing being postponed for a year, or forever. Put those who have managed to get through back on their original plan, so they at least have that, and call it a day, until the powers that be can get it right. Its not their fault someone who wasn't thinking clearly jumped the gun. Why is it the government always seems to make things worse, when trying to fix something?

I realize the insurance/health care thing is indeed broken, but why make things even worse by creating mass confusion? Those kind of measures aren't doing anyone any good. Roll it back up, assign multitudes of those fat pay check drawing seat warmers spread across the government to it, and don't present it again until its done right.

It never ceases to amaze me how things that no one in the general populace wants, are repeatedly placed into effect anyway. Not only in the federal government, but in local also. There is this healthcare thing, few had read and understood, so those in a position to put it into effect, say vote for it, then you can read and understand it..? Huh..? What kind of sense does that make? Once its already there, if you don't like it or understand it, you're stuck with it anyway.

Then there are two such instances in my local area. One a middle school no one wanted, because there were already five area elementary schools, and a high school. No one wanted the new school, which replaced two elementary schools, but the school board voted it in anyway. And the bigger, more modern, new middle school was built.

Then there was the bigger, better, and more modern, new hospital that no one wanted. The tax payers didn't want it, after a good many job losses in the area, but it was voted in anyway. And guess what, we now have a brand new hospital, no one wanted. What ever happened to government for the people, by the people, and of the people? Just a certain few in certain positions, decide, I guess..? And once again, I'm lost as to the right answer, out here in the country.

Education

It seems like nearly every day, on the local news, they report another school district either facing possible bankruptcy, million dollars deficits, cutting back on teachers, and closing schools. I suppose some of this is due to couples reducing the number of children they produce, which means lower attendance, the need for combined classes, and thereby requiring fewer teachers.

Around our local area it seems like nearly every district is having some kind of issues, even a major university. I recall one district saying it hoped to help out its fiscal problems by asking for assistance from alumnae and the district's families. Sure, I know there are those who can afford to help out, but what about all of the ones who can't, and struggle to see to their own family's needs?

And I know from past experience, people get tired of being hit up to purchase candles, candy bars, magazines, etc. Because for one thing, the prices for what you get, are actually quite ridiculous. I don't use candles, never subscribe to, or read, magazines, and try to abstain from eating too much candy and sweets. It seems to me like there should be a more productive way to raise money. I don't really know what entices people to donate, but there must be something that would make more sense.

From what I've seen, things have really changed from aeons ago when I went to school. The district provided paper tablets, lead pencils, and other things we used every day. But in this day and age, since everything is more high tech, families are expected to provide a crazy amount of "school supplies" to start the school year. I no longer have a child in school, so I'm not sure what that list entails. Myself, I don't quite understand how using a calculator, or one of these new-fangled gadgets that basically do the work for them, helps educate kids. Sure, know how to use them. But how do you learn, and remember how to do things, if you don't actually use your brain to figure them out?

It seems like I've even heard where they are going to do away with handwriting classes..? Huh? Doesn't everyone need to know how to write? Maybe not long hand written letters, or papers, but at least how to write a simple sentence, or sign your name, occasionally? Sometimes I wonder if all this new "stuff" is wise, and may not contribute to our students leaving school unprepared for real life, and the work force? I don't know, since I am unaware of what all goes on inside schools any more.

But I have young nieces, and a grandchild, and do wonder if the generations to come will have the proper education to run their lives and be productive members of society. One can only hope their parents, and their own undertakings will make them strong, resilient, and capable of doing what they have to do to survive, and prosper.

Our Country

Yesterday I began shopping for my granddaughter for Christmas. I was looking around on Amazon, and it just amazes me how much stuff is made in countries I can barely pronounce. Why, oh why, do they not carry more stuff made in this country, and more easily accessible to those bothering to look? Its Just awful how this is America, and what little is still made here, requires a detailed search just to find it.

I much prefer to Buy American, but they sure don't make it easy, or cost effective for those who want to support our country. I've searched several times for American Made clothing, and other products, but usually I end up giving up, because I cannot find anything I like. I don't mind paying a little more for something, if it looks like its better quality, and may last longer. But how can you be assured of that, even if it was made in this country?

Basically, I find it difficult to trust items made in foreign countries, maybe I'm wrong, I don't know, but I prefer to see Made In the USA on it. Of course, I've had to adjust my thinking, because rarely do you run across stuff that has that label on it. It is very sad, and I wish that would change. But with Free Trade Agreements, and manufacturing leaving in droves for countries where it costs less to operate, how can it change?

We really need to find, and support those who continue to do business in this country. They deserve credit for jumping through the hoops to remain here, make a living here, and provide jobs and products here. It can't be easy when so many have left, and so far haven't seen fit to return. What happened to the good old days, when this country was so much more worthy of our respect? Its not so much the country's fault, as those who run it, and have allowed so many things to get so far out of control. I'm hoping its not so far gone it can't still be rescued, and regain the respect it deserves before its too late.

Real

I have to wonder what happens to the REAL stuff. It seems like more and more products appear in the store made with artificial ingredients. What are these "fake" ingredients? What do they use the "real" stuff for? Recently my husband, an avid tea drinker, purchased something called Mango White Tea. It only took one cup for him to figure out it didn't contain real mango flavouring. After a couple of cups he said he didn't want any more of it. I looked at the ingredients, and no where was mango mentioned--do chemists come up with this stuff?

Today I went shopping to look for a few Halloween items to send to my granddaughter. I picked up and looked at a few snack items packaged in relatively small bags. There were trail mixes, fruit flavoured gummies, and other products, and on every bag was printed artificial flavouring. Which brought to mind the no doubt less than wonderful taste of the phony goodies. Needless to say, I dropped the one I'd looked at, and moved on. Sure they were inexpensive enough, but as the saying goes, "you get what you pay for."

I continued to look around, finally choosing a few items I was relatively familiar with, in brand names. They sure don't make it easy to find quality items. Particularly at Walmart, it seems as though they are more and more pushing their own store brands, and not carrying as many brand selections. There are a few things I will buy in store brands, but generally, not actual food products. We are on a limited budget, but we still choose to eat real food, and as well as we can.

Which really makes me wonder what they do with the real stuff, do they send it overseas? I know you can buy actual strawberries, blueberries, peaches, and other produce, but where does it come from? Is a farmer's market the only place you can find a real product, grown here? Once again, I guess I don't get it, as we do our best to find real nutritious stuff out here in the country.

Turmoil

Wonder if our government will indeed get our military involved in another foreign dispute? Why does it seem like the United States must stick its nose into every other country's problems? I can understand how we are all part of a global community, but the line must be drawn somewhere. We cannot afford to aid everyone that needs it, just because they cannot get along.

I'm sure many feel sorry for the citizens of these hostile nations, and the abuses they suffer at the hands of their governing bodies. But it seems like they should be capable of straightening out their own situations, and not require others to do it for them. How much appreciation, or thanks, would we receive if we did come to their aid? I cannot imagine it would be much, because aren't we basically hated by more than we are liked? So where do so many come off expecting help from us, when it is a thankless undertaking.

We have so many citizens out of work, homeless, in debt, including our government and states, we should be doing more to help ourselves, and less for those who wouldn't appreciate it anyway. Where does the line get drawn? Our own country needs all the help its citizens, and government could ever hope to provide. So why don't we wise up, and tend to what's going on inside our own borders?

I've always heard God helps those who help themselves. And I know not everyone believes in God, and that some have their own version. Maybe if so many weren't doing everything they can to tamp down belief in a higher power, so many dastardly, and evil occurrences wouldn't be happening around the world. I guess I'll never understand. And in many ways, I feel quite fortunate to live where I do.

I'm not real religious, but its hard to look out at the beautiful scenery surrounding me, the blue sky, sunshine, and flowers, and not believe some higher being created it. So I guess I'll keep making the best of it in the country allotted to me.

Nice?

Why would anyone consider being nice boring? Is that why so many are rude, thoughtless, and inconsiderate? Because being nice isn't "in," or exciting enough for them. Makes me wonder when being a decent human being became such a drag? Personally, I hope it never goes completely out of style, because I don't like mean people. Even though no one really cares what I think, that is how I feel.

I do believe some thoughtlessness is brought about by rushing, doing too much, and not taking time to consider the consequences of our actions. I suppose many are just self-centered, think the world revolves around them, and simply don't have that extra minute to slow down long enough to do a simple kindness. How long does it take to open a door for someone, wait a few seconds for someone to pass, or any other number of simple acts of decency? Not that long, and slowing down a little wouldn't hurt many of us.

There is nothing so important that consideration for others shouldn't at least cross our minds. But you see it every day, those who are too hurried to hold a door, or say thank you, or you're welcome. Or even those who walk as slowly as possible behind you when you are backing up in a parking lot. Sometimes it makes you wonder why they value their own well-being so little. What if you failed to look behind you, and just reversed? Would it be such a small deal then? I think not, they or their kin, would probably sue for negligence.

But would it be your fault? I don't suppose that would matter. Without a doubt it wouldn't be theirs, even if their actions caused the mishap. Particularly if they were no longer around to explain their own carelessness. Or even those who tear into a space you were waiting for in a parking lot. Is it because they have good insurance, and consider themselves above harm? I guess I'll never know, or understand, the actions of many. That is why I live in the country, where I see less people, and only occasionally come into contact with the carelessness of the masses.

Will It..?

One thing that has always bothered me, is when people tell others everything will be okay. You hear it on medical programs, when someone is hurting, or injured, and when problems beset others. We never know that for sure, unless the situation is a given. But when it comes to illness, misfortune, or natural disaster, how does anyone know the outcome in advance? They don't, and therefore, should keep quiet. Even doctors, and officials, have no infallible way of knowing whether a situation will improve, or continue to worsen.

It is hurtful to get a person's hopes up, only to have them dashed later, because the outcome doesn't meet their expectations. I'd rather a doctor, or whomever tell me the unbridled truth, than to lie, in hopes of making themselves look better. Everyone is human, mistakes are inevitable, and without a doubt things can always get worse. Another thing that bugs me is when people say things couldn't get any worse. I say, watch it, things can always get worse.

I'm not a true believer in karma, but I'd think when you say that, you are testing fate. In my opinion, things can always get worse. It usually isn't what anyone wants. But I know from past experience, that something worse could always be lurking around the next corner. We have little control over most things. And Mother Nature, among other things, is a strong adversary. No one likes to make anyone feel worse. But to give them false hope, in my opinion, is even more hurtful than the truth. Even though, in worst case scenarios, options must be weighed.

In this day, and age, where it seems so many things are out to get us, eternal optimism won't help anyone. Things happen, we need to be realistic. And often they are beyond our control. In my little space in the country, we make it through day by day. In hopes that things will stay on an even keel, and not too many, costly events will upset that.

Inappropriate?

It never ceases to make me wonder why people have so much trouble committing to a relationship in this day and age. Have things changed so much? Apparently so. Back in the day, couples married, and considered their vows important, and their union worth working to keep. I sometimes wonder if the reason is because nothing is private, or sacred any more. Even the young feel they aren't "with it," if they don't have nearly everything on display. With the tight, minuscule clothing, and television shows, magazines, the Internet, and just about everything else that leaves little to the imagination, easy to obtain.

Used to be children were shielded from such. But now days they learn too much about such things from their peers. Those of tender age, dress older than their years. They wear make up more appropriate for older individuals. And they hang out with older, more mature kids, and learn all kinds of poor behaviour. It is sad when you go to town at any hour of the evening, and see youngsters walking the streets, pushing baby carriages, and smoking cigarettes. To say nothing of the shorts barely covering their "cheeks," and mid riff bearing tight, skimpy tops.

Our nearby town has made a name for itself, in teen age pregnancies, unwed mothers, and "babies having babies." But when you drive by the city park, it isn't really difficult to see why. There shouldn't be any reason why you can't raise a kid within the city limits, if you are so inclined, and not have them walking the streets at all hours of the day and night. I believe curfews are enforced, and police patrols frequent the town. But they cannot stop every kind of clandestine behaviour. It takes parents laying down the law, bringing up their children right, knowing where they are, and what they are doing.

Fortunately, my only child was raised in the country. She had country friends, went to a small town school, and attended country events. To the best of my knowledge she didn't feel she was missing much by not walking the streets while she was growing up. And she went clear through college without smoking, drinking to excess, getting into drugs, or having a child too young. As far as I'm concerned, that makes for at least one successful undertaking out in the country.

Indifference

I don't understand why some average peoples' kids lose touch with them when they get older. Have they forgotten what their parents did for them throughout their growing up years? Or has the age where thoughtfulness, and consideration for their elders passed, and is no longer acceptable. I know that isn't entirely the answer, because not every one is like that. But I know from what I've heard that there are a good number of parents who have had this happen. I guess those grown children don't understand the affect their indifference has on those who continue to care for them.

I know someone who had their son with them until he was thirteen. Throughout his growing up years they had lived in various locations. His parents had broken up, and had gone their separate ways. Both had moved on with their lives, found different mates, and so on. When the child became of age, he chose to leave his father's country home, to relocate to the big city where his mother lived. Did he prefer the hustle and bustle of the city? Was the country too tame for him? Or was it something else? I don't know, but many years later, he still lives outside that big city with his wife, and child. They both commute into the heart of the city, from their suburban home, to work.

The above mentioned father had a good relationship with his son throughout his life. But they hadn't really kept in touch well. For quite awhile the father didn't even have an address for him. But he had found him, and had even visited them a few times. Within the past year he was even informed that he had a grand daughter. But that was it, even though he has tried repeatedly, in various ways, to communicate, his attempts have been in vain. I cannot understand how anyone could be that busy, they can't even respond in a one sentence email or instant message.

Years ago I worked for a short time in a nursing home. There was a lady who told me that her kids had sold off her house, without her consent, and had stuck her in the home. Then, they rarely, if ever, came to visit her. What is wrong with people? Are older people that dispensable in the average person's life? Fortunately, so far, that isn't the case with my daughter. They have been gone from the area about six years, and have always come home at least twice a year. And she has always, other than the exception, called me at least a couple of times a week.

I hope this continues, and that she never gets too busy, or wrapped up in her life, to remember that I exist. In my opinion, I think it is terrible that families don't keep in touch better. I realize everyone gets busy, life interferes, and things happen. But is it too much to ask to at least try to stay in touch? At least kids and parents, if not extended family. What can be so all fired important that a simple message cannot be exchanged at least periodically? Once again, just my thoughts out here in the country.

Blog?

I'm still not sure I have the faintest idea what a blog should consist of. So I have given up actually trying to understand them. I figure if some idea pops into my head throughout the day, and I can enlarge upon it, why not go with it. As long as I don't assign an actual name to my blog site, how can anyone say it isn't appropriate? Often times, I don't believe in following a firm set of rules, but blur the edges to suit myself... The way I understand it, basically a blog helps readers figure out whether the author can write anything of substance, and value. Do I? I haven't a clue. But somehow a few readers have found their way to my site.  That is wonderful, and I deeply appreciate their interest.

I will keep plugging away, because I have thought about blogging for some time. But wasn't sure if I could think of something ongoing to write about. In this way, I am not locked into one ongoing subject, but offer my thoughts on whatever enters my mind. I live in the country, have a few varied interests, a dysfunctional family, and a wonderful daughter, two grand daughters, and husband. Therefore, I have decided that I will do my best to continue to do so. There is always something happening in the country, even if it doesn't seem all that important at the time. If I don't think of something every day, eventually something will come to me. I will do my best to write one as frequently as I can.

Basically, it has been kind of fun, so far. I signed up for three different sites, but I like this one the best because it offers stats. One other doesn't, therefore I have no clue if anyone has ever read anything on it. And the final one, shows stats, but only in the beginning, as though it has somehow lost the connection. Therefore, I am going to concentrate on supplying entries for this one, and may let the others go by the wayside. Even though not everyone may agree with my viewpoint, it is only that, my viewpoint. I don't expect everyone to go along with it, but I am entitled to my opinion. That is how I see it in the country.

Family

Some fathers, and mothers, are truly amazing, while others leave a lot to be desired. I have seen both, and my father was somewhere in between. He tried, worked to support his family, but rarely showed his children, or wife, affection. He wasn't an entirely bad person, but there were areas he definitely could have improved upon. My mother and he had a pretty volatile relationship, and even though married over fifty years, had their differences of opinion. They were both tough, don't take much guff, individuals. Both are gone now, one nearly twenty years, the other coming up on seven.

There is something to be said for having both parents in a family. Both have attributes that contribute to a child growing up properly. My father wasn't really one to spend much time with his offspring. He had other interests he preferred to pursue, and often my mother accompanied him. She was more prone to at least talk to her kids, and sometimes help with homework, or teach a child how to do something. Where he was more apt to shout, and give what for, should something displease him.

My daughter's father was quick to anger, although not afraid to give learning pointers when needed. Unfortunately, he wasn't as quick to praise, or spend much time with his child. Which was sad, because he passed on when she was only fourteen. Therefore, through her high school, college, and the years since, she has only had one parent. It hasn't been easy, but we have managed to make it this far. Where I, on the other hand, spent as much time with her as I could. I worked full time, which meant she spent substantial time with grandmothers, aunts, and baby sitters. But when I had free time, it was spent with her.

I know often circumstances can wreak havoc on the family structure. And perfect conditions don't often prevail. Therefore, we do the best we can with the hand we are dealt. These days work, and a busy lifestyle often upset the family situation. It is a shame that just existing costs so much. That family members must work too many hours, or jobs, and spend too much time away from home. Whether it is commuting, working away just to have an income, or both parents working. Family members need each other, whether its mom, dad, or siblings, there is a reason why it is called a family unit. Just my thoughts out here in the country.

My Word

One thing that annoys me is when people don't keep their word. If they have no intention of doing so, they should keep their mouth shut. And its a shame when those who can't, insist on doing so anyway. Apparently the days when a person's word was their honour, have fallen by the way side. Although I am sure there are still some who are good for it. When a handshake is still considered as good as a written, and signed document.

I have always tried to have my word mean something. Even when my daughter was little, and I would think about something fun for us to do. Which wasn't always easy because I worked more than full time. Sometimes she would get upset with me because we didn't often get to do fun things. But when I was able to do something like that, I would make sure I had all my "ducks in a row" ahead of time. Enough time off, bases aligned, and the money to cover expenses for the intended event. Until that was in place, I would never say a word to her about it. Once I knew everything was arranged, then and only then, did I tell her.

In that way I was able to avoid the "never let you forget it" disappointment that was sure to follow if I didn't, or couldn't, follow through. Even with others, I didn't like letting people down. If I didn't think something was possible, I said so. Thereby, avoiding dashing high expectations, that were simply unattainable. I would rather let an opportunity pass, when I was unsure, than say I could do it, and not be able to.

It doesn't matter if money, your time, borrowing something of yours, or whatever the case may be, are involved. The principle is the same, don't make promises you cannot keep. It not only makes you look bad, but like a liar, and one not to be trusted. Why would anyone want people they may deal with on a regular basis, to view them in such a poor light? Just keeping my word out here in the country.

Unwelcome Visitors

I had my first visit, in a long time, from two associates of one of those religious witness fanatic organizations. We have periodically found their tracts left outside of our house. But it has been years since one has actually knocked on the door. Which has been fine with me, because I am not a religious fanatic. Not that I am against religion, I went to church for a lot of years. I just prefer that they leave me alone, leave a tract, or not, but don't bother knocking.

Sometimes I think these people single out country folk, because they don't get far in more populated areas. We have had them coming around forever. My first husband occasionally had a word or two with them. Then told them he was busy. He would suggest they come back when I was home. Which did not make me happy. But since we had a young child, he didn't figure he should talk to them like he would have preferred to. Which undoubtedly would have included several four letter words, and that the public highway ended at the main road.

Fortunately, most of the time I have been able to avoid them. I don't appreciate strangers coming to my place, regardless of what they are trying to sell. If I want to go to church, I know where they are located. I don't need people coming to my doorstep trying to shove their beliefs down my throat. One time my present husband had a woman cross a ladder, laid across a creek, in high heels and with two young children, attempting to do the same.

I suppose a person has to give them credit for perseverance. They do go to extraordinary measures to do their witnessing. I can remember them standing on street corners in a nearby town shouting their beliefs to individuals walking by, and cars passing on the street. But I do believe it isn't entirely right, because not everyone believes in the same things. And not all care to hear what they have to say. I know religious freedom is a right. But I still don't believe they have the right to push it onto those not interested. Again, just my opinion in my little spot in the country.

The Power of Nature

Over the past few years, on the television news, I have seen some of the devastation Nature has wrought. It is so hard to imagine where the victims of such, even begin to make sense of the mess. It would be very difficult to look at what used to be your home, and neighbourhood, only to see it left as a pile of rubble, or washed away. To imagine the irreplaceable items lost, all of the hard work that made it a home, and the money and labour needed to return it to a semblance of what it used to be.

The power of Nature is astounding. How it can pass through and leave such total destruction in its path. The way it can pick up buildings, automobiles, uproot massive trees, and wreak unimaginable havoc in its wake. What a force to be reckoned with. A minuscule human is a mere speck in the face of such mind boggling power. With such a phenomenon bent on destruction coming toward you, where could a person ever hope to find safety? Particularly when the storms contain debris of every sort, and such unbelievable wind speeds.

Such things deserve our undying respect, because of the force they exude. I have watched these "storm chaser" programs. And I wonder how in the world can people endanger their very lives, pursuing these things? I've seen the magnitude and size of funnel clouds on the television. Just the picture of such things inspire awe. It is nearly impossible to imagine seeing them in person. To watch as it sweeps across the land, debris flying hither and yon, devouring trees, and buildings in its path.

I am thankful I don't live where such things are common. We have had one or two over the years in our area. Although nothing to the magnitude of these. I have driven by areas where one had twisted, uprooted, and torn acres of trees, and brush, asunder. Not in my immediate neighbourhood, but within ten miles. Nature can be tough, and unkind, but it can also be very beautiful. And I am still thankful for my little part of the country.

Dissatisfaction

I was talking to my daughter awhile ago, and recently she has been experiencing doubts about the career path she has chosen. She has a pretty good job with a top of the line, well known retailer as an associate manager. Since she graduated from college six years ago, she has been working in retail fashion/clothing/bridal/accessory marketing. In one position, or another, and until now has seemed relatively happy with her decision.

She has been thinking back to when she was eighteen, and checking into colleges. And she wonders how does any one at that age have any idea what they want to do with the rest of their lives? I can understand her point, although I don't have any college degrees, but went right into the work force out of high school. What may seem like the ideal solution when you are young, can change from day to day. She made the decision to follow the path she did, at that time, because it had seemed like the right one.

Now, nearing thirty years of age, married, and with a small child, she is doubting the wisdom of her choices. But when you have that responsibility, as does her husband, you cannot just up and alter your life drastically. Everything has to be thought out, from every angle, before any major decisions can be made. And as we are all aware, good paying, lifestyle sustaining jobs, are not always readily available. Particularly when you work, cannot always get the time off to look around, and aren't partial to commuting long distances.

For now, she will remain where she is, even though not entirely satisfied. As time goes on, I suppose she will either look into other options within the company, or decide to look elsewhere. Certain aspects of her profession she enjoys. But sometimes your co-workers can make a situation worse. I somewhat know how she feels, since I have never had a job that I enjoyed. But I have always tried to make the best of things in my backward part of the country.

Internet

I think the Internet is an amazing tool, both for entertainment, and important things such as paying bills, checking accounts, running a business, or keeping in touch with family. It is such a shame that there are those out there who continue to try to mess up the works, in an attempt to ruin a good thing for those who do use it properly. Why does there always have to be someone with this intent in mind?

Which makes me wonder if any of these ne'er do wells ever get caught for their criminal abuses. Its too bad if they don't, although I'm sure if any are, its really not enough, or it wouldn't be as attractive to keep on trying to mess with people. I have to wonder how these people come up with the information needed to do what they do. Do they just keep on trying different combinations before they come up with one that does their dirty work? If so, these crooks really could find better uses for their intelligence, or lack of it, whichever the case may be.

Even though the Internet does have its drawbacks, it is still used for a lot of good. Why can't they just leave well enough alone, think of those who earn their livings over the web, and use it for good? Unfortunately, we all know there are those who have difficulty following the rules of society, but instead choose to profit from ill-gotten gains. I suppose it will never completely stop, so in the mean time, everyone needs to guard their information with firewalls, virus protectors, malware software, and other spies in the sky. Its just too bad nothing can ever be as it seems, because those bent on destruction are invisible to the average person. Only those with super cyber tools can track them down, and do what needs to be done.

It is my wish that those fighting the battle will continue to bring many of them to justice. After all, out here in my place in the country, the Internet is a source of several forms of entertainment, among other things.

Getting Along

I often wonder why people think they are inferior to others, whether in the way they look, dress, or live. Why is it so important to conform, or fit in? Why not just be ourselves? Personally, I used to worry about things like that, even though I never did fit in, but since I've become older, I no longer care, and haven't for some time. When I was in school I never felt like I looked as good as others, my hair didn't conform to conventional styles, my clothing wasn't as nice, and my family situation didn't seem to measure up with theirs. Why did I care?

Now as I look back, I wonder why it concerned me. I was just as good, my life was just different, as was my unruly hair, and my clothing. As long as we have the essentials to eat, a place to lie our heads, clothing to cover us, and someone who cares, why do we compare ourselves to anyone else? Regardless of social status, skin colour, religion, the way we choose to dress, or our imperfections, we are all basically created the same. There is no reason why anyone should be made to feel less than equal.

I remember when my daughter was growing up, and how mean and rude children could be. She had red curly hair, and was made to feel inferior because of that natural fact. It is sad when a child is made to feel like an outsider because of some physical attribute that is beyond their control. Eventually, she learned to come to terms with the problem, and because of it, became capable of telling off those who needed it, and standing up for herself. Sometimes we have to toughen up, and show what we are made of, because nothing else will suffice. If we don't, they will continue with their wicked ways, and making our lives miserable.

I have learned to live, and let live, in my out of the way place in the country. I think we all need to become more patient, and understanding, in our dealings with others. Otherwise, how will we learn to achieve even a modicum of civility with our surroundings?

Get Along

Why is it that people, and nations, cannot get along? We are all on this sphere called Earth, and to the best of anyone's knowledge, its not like we can just up and decide one day to go elsewhere. We have no idea if there is anywhere else within travelling distance over a lifetime, or if we could survive there, without major hazard suits and life lines, if we did decide to defect.

I know very well it is impossible for everyone to always get along, because there are too many outside forces at work for that to ever happen. But it seems like some kind of truce could be enacted, that didn't include killing each other off, fighting, wars, and other forms of unrest. There is always going to be something, whether its goods, oil, the distribution of food stuffs, or even immigrants who are going to mess with the peace. Everyone has basic requirements they cannot survive without. So why do we have to hurt each other in order to try to get what someone else has?

We all require the same basic things, to exist. Since we are all in this together, on this huge rotating ball, it is wrong for some to have such excess, and others next to nothing. It is a shame the necessities cannot be more evenly divided, so there are not those without enough to eat, good water, are homeless, and without the necessary medical care. I don't know the answer, but I think those shows of excess they put on television are just plain wrong, and a slap in the face to those who must go without.

Here in my little corner of the country I try to get by on less, minimize waste, recycle, and reuse, in order to cut expenses.

Bad News

I have to wonder why when something bad, tragic, disastrous, or Earth shattering takes place, that they have to keep repeatedly broadcasting, and running special reports on it. After we've listened to the life-altering for some, news numerous times, isn't it time to let those involved recuperate, have time to get over it, and pick up the pieces and carry on?

I know there are those who feed on drama, but that doesn't mean everyone does. We can feel bad for those affected, donate to their cause, pray for them, or whatever makes us feel better, and still not need to keep re-hashing the event. Sometimes I wonder if the media doesn't go too far with this stuff, such as the school shootings, etc. Maybe those who might be inclined to act out in such a manner, have some kind of sick fixation on how they will go down in history for their dastardly deed. If that is the case, in their poor minds, then we are feeding into their disillusionment.

I don't even pretend to know, but I still believe there comes a time when we should let it rest. We know about it, have had a chance to mourn for those involved, and then it is time to let it go. It is not good to continue to dwell on unhappy events, they have a tendency to bring us down. It is bad enough that those directly affected have lost loved ones, homes, or their way of life. And that is just the opinion of one who has seen their share of adversity, out in my small corner of the country.

Doom

Is it the state of the economy, or the speed with which technology is evolving that has doom sayers so enthralled with what could happen to humanity, and the planet? I could be wrong, but it seems like too much thinking along these lines could be a bad thing. From what you hear every day it seems like there is enough depression, drought, famine, homelessness, and natural disasters to occupy us, we wouldn't have time to be looking for other catastrophes to befall us.

The number of television series, Movies that have already been out, and others coming out, about what could happen after disaster strikes, should anyone survive, is somewhat frightening. Then when I over hear television programs that my husband, who loves science, the universe, history, and subjects along these lines, talk about what will happen after people are gone, volcanoes erupt, earthquakes snuff out life, or huge asteroids obliterate the Earth, I tend to get impatient with the naysayers of the world who keep beating this subject to death.

I say, if it happens it happens, its not like there is anything even the greatest, most powerful world leaders, or scientists can do to prevent it. But I personally think I don't want to know about it, or have some prophet tell me its coming, as long as it is beyond our control. Life itself can hold enough problems, and minor catastrophes to keep us occupied, so I say live it as best as you can, and when, or if the decision is taken out of our hands, then so be it. In the mean time, I will continue to do what I do at my little spot in the country.

Why

I guess I am pretty old fashioned, and down to earth. Because I really don't understand why it seems like just about everybody any more, is not happy with their looks. What ever happened to being content with what you were given? I realize a lot of people aren't natural raving beauties, but so what? You have a lot of company out there, and will never be alone in the fact that you look like an ordinary every day person.

Who is qualified to say what is, and isn't acceptable in the looks department? Who decided that an hour glass figure, long, straight blond hair, perfect features, and blue eyes, should be the ideal woman? I don't understand. Everyone's ancestors came from different backgrounds, with different traits,  features, and way of life. Why is that no longer good enough? I think we should be happy with the variety offered in our mixed cultural society.

Red heads can be beautiful, as can green eyes, brown hair, hazel eyes, black hair, gray eyes, blond hair, blue eyes, curls, waves, or even hair straight as strings. What is the problem? And why is a wrinkle or two, earned throughout a joyous, happy, or even a troubled life, considered a defect? I understand that having excess pounds on the human frame can, in some instances, lead to problems. But if a person has a few extra, and they are healthy, why should they be made to go to extreme measures because of the rude comments, and actions, of others? If it was as easy, or pleasurable, to lose weight, as it is to gain it from all of the good food out there, I'm sure there would not be as many overweight people.

Even with the different nationalities, whether your skin is white, brown, black, yellow, or red, it is a natural gift. Basically, we are all similar beneath the surface, and should be more patient, understanding, and accepting of each other. We can't help the way we came onto this Earth, so why should we be tortured, or abused, because of it. Unfortunately, there are those in all races who give their brethren a bad name, but lets not misuse all because of the mistakes of a few. Fortunately, I don't have to deal with a lot of the world's injustice, because I choose to live a calmer, less crazy existence out in the country.

When

When did we, as a society, become so totally uncaring, and lacking in common decency for our fellow man? I see instance, after instance, of young people, and some older, who could care less whether they hold the door for someone coming in, or out a store, or anywhere else. And countless other acts constituting a total lack of manners, such as a simple please, or thank you, or any consideration at all for others. I am not young, but I will hold the door for anyone, young, or old, male, or female, entering or leaving an establishment, and I will say please, and thank you. In my opinion, it is very rude to shut the door in anyone's face, or rudely cut in front of them. All it takes is a few seconds to demonstrate that you had some upbringing.

And the language in this day and age, I have to admit I just do not understand. I have only recently joined Facebook, and Twitter, and I was surprised to see that such language is acceptable in this form of communication. Its difficult to believe such talk is justifiable on these forms of social media where onlookers could be of any age, from a young child to a senior citizen. I know it isn't right to pass judgement on others, but I have to admit that in my opinion, it shouldn't be okay.

I know that there are those who will push the envelope, as long as no body tells them otherwise. Unless they are actually reprimanded in some way, shape, or form, they will do so anyway. Also I find it totally amazing how it seems as if nobody can talk any more without throwing in a few totally unacceptable curse words. Maybe I just spend too much time out in the country, and not really attuned to how the other half lives.
